Moving Your Networking Efforts To Higher Levels

THE STRATEGY OF NETWORKING

  1. Package yourself to project someone to buy, to know, to need, someone with whom to do business.

  2. Be an active participant in groups and organizations to plant  the seeds of what you can do and who you are.

  3. Get others to feel good about being in your presence.  Get others to talk, share and sell themselves.

  4. Listen with the intent to understand and to help  Assume the role of giver, helper, developer of their business, solution-finder of their problems.

  5. Promote yourself by maintaining on-going contact with targeted people using phone calls, notes, printed material, informational resources, and carefully selected referrals of others.  Be sure to contact these people without a hidden agenda - just to keep in touch.

  6. Treat every person with importance and respect and influence. You never know who that person knows.

  7. Sit with different people to avoid wasting time at meetings.  What is the purpose of your presence at this meeting?

  8. At meetings and seminars, take the initiative and act like the host or hostess. Introduce yourself. Help people to mingle. Look as if you are someone to know.

  9. Do not hope that people will ‘get it’ and mind-read what you need. Once you have established a mutually respectful relationship, you can feel confident to ask for help.  Most people enjoy returning efforts to those who have given to them.

  10. Always follow-up after meeting someone of interest. Set a follow-up time limit of 24-72 hours after the contact.  Time has a way of erasing the memory.

  11. Follow-up with thank you’s if others have helped you with information or referrals. Acknowledge people’s accomplishments and memorable occasions. Show that you value and appreciate this relationship with them.
