The
Basic Networking Philosophy
YES,
NETWORKING CONTACTS ARE ESSENTIAL TO NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT.
YES,
NETWORKING CONTACTS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR SOCIAL INTRODUCTIONS AND
BUILDING PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS.
YES, NETWORKING CONTACTS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR JOB SEARCHING AND
CAREER EXPANSIONS.
AND YES,
NETWORKING CONTACTS ARE ESSENTIAL TO BUILDING FRUITFUL
RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN YOUR OWN COMPANY, THE PLACE IN WHICH YOU
WORK AND SPEND LOTS OF YOUR PRECIOUS TIME.
In fact, only
after you work in corporations can you truly appreciate that
your effectiveness depends on the support from people in a
variety of departments as well as across various levels. For a
business organization to run like a successful, champion team
(of which all members move toward the same goals) a formal and
serious networking process must be kept in place and
continuously developed.
Unfortunately, most business organizations introduce their new
members by the typical methods of a map and tour of the
facilities, and perhaps an organizational chart, and the
assignment of one person to act as a contact, when needed.
(Usually, this one person is available for the first day of
questions and lunch with the new person and then typically
becomes another number or email address for the new person's
database.) Outmoded systems of recognizing the work efforts of
members of the business organization continue to prevail.
Therefore, if
we are to focus on productivity, growth in the bottom line,
getting promoted, achieving common goals, and working as a
winning team, then nurturing networks and strategic
relationships at work are essential.
What good is
doing a great job IF nobody knows about it? Personal visibility
and awareness by others are basic requirements for job
success. Therefore it is imperative to your job satisfaction and
career advancement that you develop strategies to help people
appreciate (as well as know) what you do - who you are - how you
can help them and their objectives.
